Self Report or Not?

We had a situation last year involving an elder abuse allegation.  The family indicated they would be filing a complaint.  Investigation was promptly completed and the findings were discussed with Administration.  Despite recommendations  to self-report this incident to DOH, the decision was made not to report.   Consequently, one year post-event, we had a surprise visit from DOH and were cited for not reporting.  As always, there are pros and cons to self-reporting.  Make sure that there is a detailed discussion about the ramifications of not reporting.  Otherwise, you could find yourself with DOH knocking at your door!
